Chambers included in GB Euro team | |||
Dwain Chambers has been named in Great Britain's team for the European Indoor Championships in Turin on 6-8 March. An injury to Tyrone Edgar means Craig Pickering and Simeon Williamson will line up alongside gold-medal favourite Chambers in the 60 metres. Injured Kelly Sotherton is a doubt for the pentathlon, but knee problems mean triple-jumper Phillips Idowu is out. Marilyn Okoro, Jenny Meadows and Mo Farah are included after impressing at the Aviva Grand Prix at the weekend. "Chambers guaranteed his place with brilliant performance in the trials 10 days ago, and heads to Turin as gold medal favourite." Farah performed superbly at the event in Birmingham, slashing his own British 3,000m indoor record by 6.52 seconds in clocking seven minutes 34.47 seconds. Okoro and Meadows set personal bests in Birmingham, with Okoro just 0.06secs outside the British record held by double-Olympic champion Kelly Holmes. Olympic triple jump silver medallist and defending indoor champion Idowu has not competed this season and a knee injury has forced his exclusion. Sotherton missed Birmingham's Grand Prix with a heel injury and has delayed a decision on whether she will be participating in Italy next month. Speaking before the team was announced, Van Commenee said Chambers' doping ban should be left in the past and he should be welcomed back into the squad with open arms. Commenee told the BBC: "He's obviously our strongest candidate for gold in Turin. "The man has done something wrong, he's served his sentence, he's shown remorse and that's how it goes in life."
