Commonwealth light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly needed 135 seconds to dispose of Samson Onyango in Swindon. Welshman Cleverly, 21, was making the second defence of his crown. The Cefn Forest fighter hurt his Kenyan opponent with a body shot midway through the round, and continued with assaults to the body thereafter. Onyango eventually crumpled under the pressure, failing to beat the referee's count, as Cleverly extended his unbeaten record to 15 fights. Cleverly could now fight British champion Dean Francis, who could only manage a draw with Ugandan Joey Vegas in an eight-rounder on the same bill. Francis has won 30 of his 34 fights with 24 knockouts and is unbeaten since 2003. "Knowing that Francis holds the British title has been driving me mad," said Cleverly before his clash with Onyango. "I've been willing to fight him since the autumn, but for one reason or another the fight hasn't been made. "I've always dreamed about becoming a British champion, and to add the Lonsdale belt to my Commonwealth title would be a great buzz." |
